Simose Art Garden Villa is an art hotel composed of ten villas, a restaurant, and an art museum designed by internationally renowned Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, recipient of the 2014 Pritzker Architecture Prize. Our concept is “stay in iconic architecture by the sea.” Guests may choose from one of ten unique all-suite villas, including the Paper House, with a structure made from Ban’s signature paper tubes, as well as other villas based on some of Ban’s most well-known vacation home designs. Our restaurant serves French cuisine made with local ingredients. Enjoy a refreshing time in a garden of architecture, food, and art.

Villas

Wall-Less House

This villa, a recreation of a vacation home built in Karuizawa in 1997, is centered on a distinctive space with three sides enclosed by sliding glass doors. The transparent, exceptionally open space blends into its natural surroundings. From the sofas and bathroom, enjoy a sense of floating among the trees, sea, and sky.

Paper House

This villa employs Ban’s signature recycled paper tubes for the primary structure, and is a recreation of a villa built in 1995 on Lake Yamanaka. A rhythmical S-shaped array of 110 paper tubes frames an airy space in which light spills through gaps between the columns. The S-shape of paper tubes also envelops an open-air bath.

Cross Wall House

This villa, newly designed for Simose Art Garden Villa, is centered on a cross formed by two intersecting walls, which serve as the primary structure and support a living space that floats above the ground. The living room-style bath area on the top floor has a hinoki bath and daybed overlooking the Seto Inland Sea.

House of Double-Roof

This villa has a distinctive double-roof structure in which the roof and ceiling are separated, and is a remake of a private retreat built in 1993 on a slope alongside Lake Yamanaka. The villa features a terrace that blends into the ocean, sky, and greenery, where guests will find a Jacuzzi tub and daybed at the top of a spiral staircase.

Kielsteg House A-E

These all-new villas are built with walls made of Kielsteg, a wooden construction material from Austria with a distinctive cross section. Light trickles inside as if filtering through trees. Each of the five structures has unique features, including one with a Jacuzzi tub on the terrace. These villas catch the pleasant winds that flow across the Seto Inland Sea.

Furniture House

This villa, which uses furniture such as closets and bookshelves as walls and pillars, is a remake of a vacation home built in 1995 alongside Lake Yamanaka. The villa includes at-home comforts including a kitchen and a Japanese-style room with a sunken low table.

SIMOSE French Restaurant

Watch the ever-changing sea and sky of Setouchi and our chefs carefully preparing each dish in the open kitchen at our French restaurant. The cuisine is supervised by Takahiko Ozawa of the beloved French restaurant Ozawa in Shirokanedai, Tokyo. Savor a meal to discover local delicacies and the joy of food.

Museum

Simose Art Museum

The museum houses a collection of approximately 500 works of art assembled over half a century by Yumiko Shimose, President of Marui Sangyo Corporation, including many pieces inherited from her parents and co-founders of the company, Fukuei and Shizuko Shimose. The museum is a work of art itself, featuring eight movable exhibition rooms that appear to float on water in a design by Shigeru Ban that was inspired by the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.

Emile Gallé’s Garden
Visitors can enjoy the seasonal flowers and plants that French artist and designer Emile Gallé (1846-1904) used as motifs for his works.

Seaview Terrace
This terrace looks out upon the harmonious scenery of Shigeru Ban’s architecture and the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. After sunset, the lights of the Otake Industrial Complex can also be seen.

Architect

Shigeru Ban
Born in Tokyo in 1957, Shigeru Ban graduated from the Cooper Union School of Architecture in New York in 1984. After working at Arata Isozaki & Associates from 1982-83, he established Shigeru Ban Architects in 1985. Ban also founded the disaster relief organization Voluntary Architects’ Network (VAN). Major works include the Centre Pompidou-Metz (2010), the Mt. Fuji World Heritage Centre, Shizuoka (2017), and the Swatch Omega Headquarters (2019). He has received recognition including Commandeur de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de France (2014), the Pritzker Architecture Prize (2014), the Order of the Purple Ribbon (2017), and the Mother Teresa Memorial Award (2017).

Simose Art Garden Villa is located in Otake in southwestern Hiroshima Prefecture just across the water from Miyajima, known for its World Heritage Site of Itsukushima Shrine. We offer car service from Iwakuni Kintaikyo Airport, Kuba Sataiton, Otake Station or Shin-Iwakuni Station to Simose Art Garden Villa.
